Rangers are facing a rebuild this summer, and we’ll see some familiar faces leave but also a fresh injection of new players are coming to Ibrox.

The new season is upon us and it’s been a busy summer for the Belgian manager, adding both depth, talent and experience to his Rangers.

Philippe Clement is known for his skills in developing young players and with that in mind, this transfer season is an exciting one, bringing in a bunch of youngsters.

Perhaps we are looking at a bright future for some of these new players, but we must not forget what’s ahead of us.

Rangers finished 2nd last season, only 3 points behind Celtic, and while talent development is well and good, it’s time to win the league. Now.

To reach two cup finals and get a trophy in his first season as a manager is a good effort but now the expectations are higher.

As of August 1st, Clement has brought in 8 players, in what can be described in no other way than a rebuild.

  • Oscar Cortes, 20 (return on loan from Lens)
  • Jefte, 20 (from Fluminense)
  • Connor Barron, 21 (from Aberdeen)
  • Clinton Nsiala, 20 (from AC Milan)
  • Liam Kelly (from, 28 Motherwell)
  • Hamza Igamane, 21 (Rabat, Morocco)
  • Václav Cerny, 26 (WfL Wolfsburg)
  • Robin Pröpper, 30 (Twente)

The new season starts on August 3rd and it will surely be an exciting one. Will the Rangers be able to get better this year? Or will the rebuild take time? Bet on the new season and preview the odds for the coming fixtures.

At the end of June, Clement claimed that he was looking to add experience to the squad, and since then we’ve seen players like Vaclav Cerny (26) and Robin Pröpper (30) come in.

Additionally, the 28-year old Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland, has been rumoured all summer to make a move from Edinburgh to Glasgow.

If it has been a busy summer, it’s nothing compared to the past 12 months for the Belgian manager since he was appointed, having to deal with a rebuild of the squad (and the stadium) and of course the long lists of injuries.

As for additional possible summer signings, Philippe Clement has been keeping a tight lid on things and when he was questioned about potential interest in Lawrence Shankland, he refused to comment, saying that he “refuses to go into rumours and especially not on players that his side will be playing”. As faith would have it, the Rangers are playing Hearts in the season opener on August 3rd.

As for other signings, there has been some interest in the Spanish playmaker Joan Jordan. The 30 year old Spaniard is looking for a move out of Sevilla as he is not a starter, and the Rangers are hoping to secure his services, but a common theme this transfer season (as every other) – the financial side of things needs to add up. However, other rumours are saying that he doesn’t want to leave Spain.

Speaking of financial things. The free agent Marco van Ginkel is now free to sign as he is no longer a Vitesse player. If the name seems familiar, it’s probably because the midfielder was once part of Chelsea. The now 31 year old Dutchman is reported to be discussed by Rangers as a shrewd way to strengthen the squad.

Captain James Tavernier was the top scorer last year for the Rangers with his 17 goals. In total Rangers scored 72 goals in the league campaign. And the top goal scorer? Lawrence Shankland of Hearts with his 21.

Both Shankland and Tavernier have been the topic of discussion as Tavernier have been linked to a Rangers-exit, and at the same time there have been discussions of a potential Shankland-move to Glasgow.

Earlier this year, the captain declared his commitment to the club, feeling the need to address the speculations of him leaving Glasgow. His 17 goals as a right-back is exceptional and his offensive skills cannot be denied, but the fans are questioning his pace and defending.

If Tavernier were to leave, there would be a void not only in terms of goals, but also in terms of leadership as the captain has been with the Gers since 2015.

There have been reported interest from Turkey as Trabzonspor are looking to sign the right-back. They have already signed former Rangers Borna Barisic and John Lundstram this summer, which could perhaps cushion the move for the 32 year old captain.

Another player on the Rangers radar is Morgan Whittaker in Plymouth. As it happens, Whittaker has been a target for a long time and it’s been reported that two bids from the Glasgow club have failed. The winger scored 20 goals for Plymouth last season and could be a valuable asset to this Clement-side. But if that were to happen, it would be costly. Plymouth signed him for £1m one year ago, now they want £10m for him.

And speaking of which. The Rangers management need to sort out the Todd Cantwell situation one way or another. The Englishman stated that he wants to leave and handed in a transfer request and has been with the second team since. Boss Clement has however stated that his door is open and there is time for Cantwell to change his mind.

It is said that Philippe Clement is a fan of the Manchester United youngster Hannibal Mejbri who is set to leave Old Trafford permanently this summer. It is reported that the 21 year old Tunisian also has fans on the other side of town as Celtic is also considering signing him.

If any of these Ranger rumours will come true (some dreams do), it remains to be seen. The Rangers office still has time to get their funds together as new players can be brought in for a few more weeks until the window closes on August 30th.
