It has been confirmed Rangers have made a move for Brazil’s Kaiky Fernandes Melo (or Kaiky to you and I), who is surplus at Almeria in LaLiga and was loaned out to Albacete because he didn’t make it at his new club.
Indeed, joining Almeria in 2022 he’s made just 25 appearances for them (16 starts) before relegation saw him being farmed out in January to Albacete who he turned out for just 11 times (10 starts).
In short terms his career has really crashed since departing Santos, albeit he is only 20 at this point and more regarded as a ‘future prospect’.
Well, we say that, word is that Rangers offered around £500,000 for a loan with obligation to buy for £6M and a 30% sell-on clause. This was dismissed.
We’re not quite sure why we’re interested in a lad who struggled in LaLiga then struggled in their second division, when Ianis Hagi is in the same boat and not remotely in the picture.
As we’ve said before, until Rangers sell anyone (really struggling there) we don’t have the funds to buy, so we’re opting for the new fashion of loans with obligation.
This is basically the same thing as hire purchase by paying a loan/rent but then owning the thing once the full price is remunerated at a set date.
This lad doesn’t strike as worth £1M never mind £6M and we have no idea why we’re making a move for him.
Desperation?
No, it’s potentially a replacement for Robin Propper, yes, already. We’ll await to hear manager Philippe Clement’s proper prognosis on him following the slightly concerning things he already said:
“I think it’s going to be okay with Robin. He told me his back was totally blocked after a duel, which can happen when you get a bad knock. Because of that he started to get more problems with his groins so it was dangerous to continue. So I hope it will be okay.”
‘Hope’. Well that’s reassuring.
We’re not quite sure why we’re aiming for a Brazilian lad with no real pedigree.
Par for the course with this Rangers these days.
