Rangers’ summer spend revealed, and it’s a shocker
PAISLEY, SCOTLAND - APRIL 28: Mohamed Diomande of Rangers celebrates after James Bolton of St Mirren turns his cross into his own net for an own goal during the Cinch Scottish Premiership match between St. Mirren FC and Rangers FC at The Simple Digital Arena on April 28, 2024 in Paisley, Scotland. With ‘them’ lot closing in on a club record £11M to sign some punter from Germany, we wanted to look at what Rangers have actually spent this summer, with, as it appears, Rangers’ transfer window ending with no further additions.

So here we go, here’s what we have spent:

Mohamed Diomande: £4.5M.

This is where a huge portion of Rangers’ summer budget went, with his deal in January being an obligation to buy in summer. That was activated early July and Rangers ended up what is proving to be a rather underwhelming signing for a massive fee.

Jefte: €750,000

This one was measured in Euros, which is broken down to about £600,000. He was a low-cost addition from Fluminese, having shone (ish) in Cyprus.

Hamza Igamane: £1.5M-£2.5M

This one was a farce – Rangers signed an injured player who wasn’t physically or emotionally ready. Either Clement ended up saddled with a crock, or a player who wasn’t up to it psychologically. Either way, it cost Rangers between £1.5M-£2.5M (depending on your source) for the privilege. One of the most absurd signings Rangers have ever made. We have no idea if/when this lad will play.

Connor Barron: £400,000-£1M

This was a free (for now) but because the Dons are threatening to take it to a tribunal, having rejected Rangers’ initial development fee offer, it will definitely cost a few quid. We just don’t know how much.

Robin Propper: £1.5M

A nifty escape clause confirmed by FC Twente stopped the Dutch side getting more for their captain. But as yet we’ve not received a lot of value for money for this one as it stands.

So, including Diomande, it’s £9M spent, excluding loan fees, agent fees and signing on fees.

If we remove him from the equation and consider his fee a January ringfence, it’s a paltry £3.5M if we conservatively assume Igamane was only £1.5M.

Barron’s fee will add a little to this, but while Rangers have shipped 11 players out, we’ve spent next-to-nothing this window on new talent.

It’s no wonder the board bribed Clement with a fat pay rise and longer deal to stay, because he’s had absolutely no funds at all.

You just can’t rebuild Rangers with £3.5M.
