It goes without saying Saturday’s clash with Motherwell at Ibrox is critically important for Rangers, given two massive factors:
Firstly, the fact Philippe Clement’s team has already yielded the lead to Celtic on the opening day with that stumble at Tynecastle, but secondly that Rangers got such a good response in Poland.
The crucial point to the second aspect is will Rangers crumble at ‘home’ this weekend having done so in Edinburgh, or will Clement’s side take the form and workrate shown in midweek and bring that back to Glasgow?
Motherwell were abysmal last season, a huge collapse from the former Stephen Robinson years (he’s now doing that stuff at St Mirren to excellent effect) to the now more modest Stuart Kettlewell.
Motherwell had a solid start to the season last campaign but fell away painfully and were deservedly bottom half, and a draw at home with Ross County on the opening match day this season did little to suggest they’re on a better footing this time around.
So if there’s a team to take at home and continue some good form against, it’s Motherwell, who have also lost 8 men through injury, and their best player Theo Bair to Auxerre.
They’re not in a good place, and prior to Tuesday, neither were Rangers.
It’s not all fixed after the Kyiv result, but it was promising, better, and that’s what Rangers need this weekend again.
Motherwell will desperately want to get their season started, and we know they’re a big and physical team who put themselves about, but equally Rangers need a win. Badly.
We’ll see this weekend if Clement can settle his side and give us our first 3 points in… a very long time.
