There’s a bunch of outrage the past 36 hours after Philippe Clement effectively confirmed that Todd Cantwell is refusing to play for the B team, after only admitting that the decision for the playmaker not to play for the B team ‘wasn’t his’.
David McCallum, manager of the B side, has not made any public comment on this topic, nor will he, but clearly the reserves boss is not going to axe Cantwell from his squad. That would be an unprecedented act and absurdly ridiculous. McCallum is the boss of the B team but even Alex Lowry has turned out for that team.
No, it’s on Cantwell, who has dug his Rangers grave dreadfully over the past few months, with conduct literally unheard of at this club by any past player.
We have had players with some questionable attitudes before, but Cantwell’s is a whole new level where he clearly decided months ago he was leaving Rangers, and has done little but taken pot shots at the club and the fans ever since, while refusing to do his job as well.
Is this a sacking offence?
We’d imagine it is. But that’s not going to happen; what may occur here is Rangers and Cantwell parting company on ‘mutual consent’, whereby the club will give him a little payoff and the contract is terminated.
We’re absolutely not pinning the whole saga on Cantwell, the manager has a big portion of blame here too. His management of Cantwell when he first took over was shockingly poor, he didn’t know how to manage a maverick player with creativity to burn.
Initially he wrecked him (almost on purpose) by shoving him out on the right wing, and then humiliating him v Aris by the early sub.
Then his comments on the attacker weren’t too good, and he was clearly the wrong man to in any way put Cantwell under control. He just didn’t know what he was doing.
Add that to Cantwell’s immaturity, poor attitude and borderline misconduct, and you have two men who Rangers are too big for, out of their depth and acting erratically.
Either way, Cantwell won’t play for the club again, having now burned every bridge there is.
Sooner Rangers find a way to get him off the payroll the better.
If Cantwell is refusing to play, his wages should be withheld. Simples.
