Rangers, officially, have as good as confirmed captain James Tavernier is going nowhere, after a full featurette and interview was released on August 1st discussing his preseason and the campaign ahead, while the player himself dismissed the rumours as well.

Following months of speculation, offers, bids, interest, the club right back has seemingly rejected any notion of departing, albeit not in direct words, but has said he takes no notice of the speculation (false) and just gets on with his job (kind of true), but the simple fact the club chose a big sit down interview and chat with him was for a statement.

A statement that unless a genuinely big bid comes in for the former Newcastle man, he simply isn’t going anywhere.

It appears the Trabzonspor interest is done – the Turkish club wouldn’t increase their bid from €4M to €5M, and despite agreeing personal terms, the negotiations ended.

Why they wouldn’t add that one extra million only they know, but that is dead in the water unless they change their mind.

There are rumour of Besiktas, but nothing materialised there either, meaning as things stand, Rangers go into the new season with Tavernier remaining as captain and leaking goals like they’re going out of fashion.

His rhetoric was of someone who was happy where he was, and at £33,000pw we’re not that surprised – he would have raised his wage to the region of £40,000 at Trabzonspor, but the interest there seems to be over.

As things stand, James Tavernier will be Rangers’ RB until his contract ends.

  1. First thing is to remove the captaincy. Second is push him further upfield where he spends most of his time anyway, and go 3-5-2.
