Rangers seek to replace Alex Lowry, Todd Cantwell and Ianis Hagi with Chelsea youth playmaker Leo Castledine, 18, potentially on a loan deal.

All three attackers are surplus at Ibrox, Lowry being told to find another club and both Cantwell and Hagi handing in transfer requests, meaning Rangers have just Tom Lawrence in that position, albeit the Welshman had a marginally more impressive showing in Poland before fading hard.

£1M-rated Castledine, who has never played in the Premier League before, is considered one of the Stamford Bridge Academy’s most promising talents, having shone at all youth levels with the London giants including the UEFA Youth League (Champions League for kids). He has an EFL appearance at senior level v Middlesborough as his one first team outing.

Rangers are thin in the playmaker’s slot – all options that were previously considered viable are no longer, and just ex-Derby Lawrence stands as pretty much all manager Philippe Clement has to choose from.

For the foreseeable future, Lawrence is likely to be a regular starter, but to give his dues he was very good before fading so hard after 20 minutes in Poland.

And here’s the thing with Lawrence – better fitness might yield better results, because he lacks stamina and floats in and out of matches a fleck too much.

Castledine at just 18 has all the energy to burn and Rangers could absolutely use a playmaker of his talent and potential stamina and pace.

National career? He has a solid 26 caps at all youth levels for England (5 at the current U19s), and is viewed as one for the U21s when he becomes eligible.

He’s a lad with a lot ahead of him, and Rangers would do well to secure him even if it is the reported loan we’d be dealing with.

See how this one plays out.
