We’re not quite sure why this one has resurfaced, but yes, Rangers are again being linked with Colombia’s Gustavo Puerta, the 21-year-old Bayer Leverkusen midfielder rated at around £3M, with a very healthy seeming Bundesliga appearances and 3 Europa League ones.
The deal for this boy is said to be a loan, with Rangers reluctant to dip into the kitty received for Sam Lammers and Connor Goldson (yes, he’s really gone) of around £6.5M, and while fans might wonder ‘why another midfielder’.
In truth we’d wonder that ourselves, and do suspect a little touch of agent nonsense going on here.
Puerta only has two starts in German football, both in the Europa League, and his Bundesliga outings were all as late subs.
Rangers currently have Dujon Sterling, Mohamed Diomande, Connor Barron and the hopefully-soon-returning Nicolas Raskin in that position of central mid.
Bringing in a 21-year-old with very little CV behind and really only experience in South America doesn’t seem all that wise or an especial good use of resources, especially as Rangers are fairly well equipped in the middle of the park, give or take, but he does have a surprising 30 U21 Colombian international caps.
In all honesty we suspect Puerta’s agent has dropped his name in our circles and is trying to drum up interest in him.
It’s not that he’s a bad player, he’s just no better than what we have and we don’t need him in that area.
Of course, we have experience of players who didn’t do so well in the Bundesliga – look at Cerny for example. He’s had a blistering start to his Rangers career.
But that doesn’t mean that rule will work for all.
So we’re cautious about this one, we don’t really need him, not even as a loan.
But we suppose for squad depth at a low wage, it might not be the worst idea ever. Low risk at low cost.
It’s just not that interesting a link.
