Whisper it, Cyriel Dessers is starting, finally, to win Rangers fans over. Ibrox Noise has been a strong advocate of the Nigerian, ever since we examined that in fact he was better all-round than ex-Aberdeen hitman Bojan Miovski, who Ibrox supporters seemed to rate higher than our hitman.
We knew, and know, Dessers has his faults, but his latest goal is seeing even his most ardent detractors hold their hands up and admit the boy is clearly doing it for the club.
5 matches this season, 3 goals and an assist.
4 in 5. It’s hard to argue with those numbers, and less fans now are.
Will Dessers ever be the polished striker who makes the job look easy? No. He will still sclaff over easy chances, miss empty nets and fall over his feet. He will always be cumbersome – the boy is not a graceful lad.
But 4 in 5 is hard to debase, isn’t it?
Dessers’ entire record at Rangers under Clement is now 22 goals, 7 assists in 44 appearances.
He now has a clean one in two rate for goals, and something approaching 2 in 3 for overall.
His record is extremely hard to debate, and while we don’t think he’ll ever be universally loved, one full year into his joining the club and he now seems settled and genuinely content to stay.
If we were signing a player with his Rangers record, fans would be thrilled with that – it would be a yes please.
Admittedly he has weaknesses – he’s not that quick, he’s not too good with being a target man aerially and he’s not big and strong. He’s also, historically, not been too clinical but how bad can he be when he’s 27 for 44 under Clement?
Fact is he’s doing better than alright and deserves a bit of credit for that.
And of course, his goal at Hampden yesterday was outstanding, even if the referee didn’t have a clue what he was doing.
Nice one Cyriel.
