Rangers ‘close in’ on new CEO following Hearts links
Former Rangers Chairman John Bennett. We wish him well.

Hot on the heels of what appears to be a failed attempt to secure Hearts Chief Executive Andrew McKinlay, which was an ‘exclusive’ from the Daily Record, it’s now the other red top the s*n who claims that the board moved onto St Mirren vice-chairman Jim Gillespie as the latest endeavour to secure James Bisgrove’s replacement.

It has to be said, this has been a literal shambles second only to the stadium fiasco.

While Bisgrove’s resignation came out of the blue, and left the board board pole-axed, that was only late May. Here we are approaching the end of August and still no new CEO is appointed.

Chairman John Bennett went on record on the 29th for that big interview saying there would be CEO news ‘soon’ but three weeks later aside tabloid claims and counter claims we’re still to be furnished with the news, and it appears the Hearts man said no.

Gillespie?

Naturally he’s being hyped up as the greatest thing since sliced bread, a man who will sort Rangers out easily. Which is why he was second choice behind McKinlay, of course.

Let’s face it, the board absolutely do not know what the heck they are doing right now, and John Bennett has been taken completely out of his depth by his former CEO’s exit and is now struggling to essentially run the club completely on his own.

John Bennett never expected to be put in this position – he was a mere board member, then Douglas Park quit and he stepped up to take the reins as a temporary chairman, acting.

Hey presto, next thing we know he’s become permanent, and Stewart Robertson then quits – to eventually be replaced by Bisgrove. Who then quit.

Now Bennett is doing it all by himself and the poor sod is drowning.

Fans, in truth, are being very unfair blaming him – he’s the only guy left to target, and he’s getting it thick. Despite his investing £20M in the club, he’s the bad guy now.

And that’s because the product on the pitch, being woefully mismanaged by the increasingly-hapless Philippe Clement, is dire. If it was better, the suits wouldn’t be so maligned.

As it is, the next attempt at trying to sort this out is apparently bringing Gillespie in.

We can only hope Bennett has the right man, if this story is true.
