Rangers are finally set to ship Todd Cantwell out of Ibrox with the ex-Norwich playmaker making his way to… yes, Trabzonspor, like everyone else.
Trabzonspor, or Rangers Retirement Home as it is probably going to be renamed soon, are in firm negotiations with the 26-year-old, and are set to secure his signature pretty quickly, where Cantwell will rejoin former Rangers team mates John Lundstram and Borna Barisic in Turkey.
Whether it will be secured in time for the attacker to play any part in tomorrow’s season-opener v Sivasspor is unknown, but unlikely.
Transfer fee looks like being in around the region of £2.5M, a far cry from the £40M valuation Cantwell had in his Norwich days amid interest from Aston Villa and Liverpool, and a modest £500,000 profit on what Rangers paid for him last year, but it’s still another hefty wage of around £25,000pw off Rangers’ bill.
We do know that Cantwell did take a flight to Turkey recently, and it’s claimed in the Turkish press that:
“Trabzonspor changed course to Scotland… The target is Todd Cantwell from Glasgow Rangers. Cantwell, 26, is known for his excellent game vision. The British number 10 was on the list of the world’s best teams with his performances while playing for Norwich City…
TRABZONSPOR started negotiations with a big name and a familiar club for the number 10 region. Cantwell, who is 26 years old and 1m 80 tall, plays for Glasgow Rangers in Scotland. Todd Cantwell, who entered the football world with Norwich City, was known as the ‘Velvet Ankle Number 10’ due to his excellent game vision and the use of his feet and head at the same time. The British playmaker, who cut ties with Rangers, was offered to Trabzonspor.
According to the information received, a red and blue manager flew to Glasgow by private plane the other day to meet with Todd Cantwell. The same plane returned to Turkey a few hours later. The claimants claimed that the meeting was positive and that the transfer of Todd Cantwell would be made official in a short time. It was stated that Cantwell, known for his magnificent technique and long shots, would prefer Trabzonspor for a new challenge. Cantwell, who played a total of 44 matches last season, scored 8 goals and 7 assists.”
Regardless of who flew where, there has been a meeting, and it seems like it won’t be long before Cantwell is being confirmed as a Trabzonspor player.
He would be the fourth sale this summer after Robby McCrorie, Sam Lammers and Connor Goldson.
We await further news on this.
