In a surprise twist, Rangers managed to get new signing Robin Pröpper over the line before the Champions League deadline, and the Dutchman is now an outside bet to start at Tynecastle on Saturday, depending on both international clearance (FIFA ratifying the deal) and his fitness.
His fitness shouldn’t be a massive issue, he’s kept himself fit all preseason with Twente so he’s ready to go, but the paperwork needs to come from FIFA HQ in Zürich before he can ‘legally’ take the field.
But the excellent news is there is no reason whatsoever for Philippe Clement to ever field Ben Davies aside injuries, because Pröpper is an ambidextrous defender who has played a tonne of times on the left of defence. He’s adept with his left as with his right.
This means Clement will have to decide who partners with him, likely to be John Souttar.
That said, knowing this manager, it’ll be Propper on the right and Davies on the left.
Can you tell we don’t have a tonne of faith in Clement doing the ‘logical’ thing?
But, if all is pure and holy, Rangers’ defence going into the new season is Tavernier, Souttar/Balogun, Propper, Ridvan.
But when is it pure or holy in Govan these days?
The big issue remains RB – Tavernier remains installed there permanently, and we have no other viable option there instead, despite fans’ misguided cries for the Dujon Sterling who absolutely stinks in that slot – brilliant in DM, woeful as RB. There’s a reason he was stuck in League One in that position before Rangers signed him.
Left back? Not so bad – Ridvan is a top wee left back and we’re happy to have him. Jefte horrible though, and we’re unsure on Fraser.
One other suggestion is Leon Balogun at RB (the wee Japanese guy is still in his back pocket we’re sure) with Souttar and Propper in the middle, and Ridvan.
But we doubt that’ll happen either.
Point is though that Davies really shouldn’t play any more, and is only squad depth. Rather expensive squad depth, at around £30,000pw.
But at least Propper is sorted.
