So as every man, woman, child, uncle and pet dog knows, Celtic have withdrawn their 5% allocation for Rangers at Parkhead next month, and Rangers have responded with the same for January’s return fixture at whatever stadium the club will be in by then.
And therein is the nub – just when the two clubs had sorted out the Old Firm ticketing fiasco and resolved away fans in this fixture, Celtic immaturely dredge it back up.
There was absolutely no reason for them to withdraw Rangers’ allocation next month, and while Rangers have only ourselves to blame for the Ibrox stadium fiasco, and our board should take full responsibility for this, we have no possible reason for Celtic to restore the away fan ban.
Of course, there’s uncertainty over where Rangers’ home stadium will even be by January, hands held firmly up there. It’s not ideal for anyone, absolutely not.
But end of the day whether it’s a Ready Ibrox or it’s still at Hampden, Rangers were more than capable of hosting 5,000 Celtic fans wherever it was needed.
The statement in full:
RANGERS was today informed that Celtic will make no allocation for away fans for the September Old Firm game.
The allocation to be implemented by both clubs was clear and Rangers was taking all steps towards fulfilling that agreement.
In the meantime, we can confirm that no away allocation will apply for the January Old Firm fixture at Ibrox. This is consistent with the reciprocity embedded in the agreement reached between the clubs and the SPFL.
Aside the grammar error of ‘was’ and the presumption that Ibrox will be ready in January, it’s understandable that as petty as Rangers are being by reciprocating Celtic’s immaturity, it’s all still ugly between them both and this issue just keeps rumbling on.
Why do we wonder if there will ever be an away fan at an Old Firm match ever again…
