Rangers striking legend Mark Hateley has rather optimistically aimed Rangers’ sights on Ivan Toney as a summer signing he’d love to get to Ibrox.
Speaking to Online Slots Real Money, Hateley namedropped the Brentford superstar as one Rangers would be in dreamland to get, but hey, most clubs would.
He said:
“I think Rangers need a centre-half, an attacking midfielder and a striker. We’d take Ivan Toney from Brentford if they could afford to pay for him – let’s get Ivan in, I think he’d do! I think they need to strengthen right through the heart of the team. Philippe Clement will see where those areas are and will have some people in mind for those positions, but in order to bring anyone into the club, they need to get some of their existing players out the door. Those three positions are where I think Clement should be looking to strengthen. That said, it’s not worth even trying to guess who he’s going to bring in, and if they end up not signing anyone, then they’ll have to deal with what they’ve got.”
Of course, Toney is worth literally just under half what Rangers’ entire squad is worth, with Rangers’ squad measuring up at around £110M overall, whereas Toney’s well-documented value is around £50M+.
So it’s a silly suggestion, but of course, he’s completely correct in many ways. We do need a new defender, we absolutely desperately need a playmaker, and another striker would be useful as well.
Cyriel Dessers is on fire at the moment, so the need for another 9 isn’t as crucial as it was, but one injury there and we’re in trouble.
As for playmaker, yes, we have effectively none, just Tom Lawrence, who may have shone better v County but everyone did that day. He’s just not delivered overall for what Rangers need.
Hateley is in cuckoo land wanting Toney at Rangers, but we can all dream, can’t we?
