It has been reported this evening that Rangers are looking to sell winger Rabbi Matondo to Leeds United, after the Elland Road side allegedly began to ‘keep track’ of his potential for a move.

Matondo is a signing that failed at Ibrox, sadly, despite Ibrox Noise’s faith in him, and opinion that he had pace and talent.

Unfortunately his decision-making remains abysmal, and he lacks any kind of end product, and in just over two years in Govan, he has only 23 starts with 62 overall appearances.

He is of course only 23 and is (wrongly) classed by some outlets as a left winger despite spending most of his Rangers appearances on the right flank. He’s overall, in his career, been equal on either side – 55 appearances as a right winger to 54 as a left.

Sadly Schalke (his prior club) realised pretty fast that Matondo was a bust – two goals in 32 appearances had them loaning him out, with Ross Wilson and his scouting network investing £3M to the Germans for the winger ‘with the potential’. This wasn’t a Giovanni van Bronckhorst signing, but like all the incoming under the Dutch, a Wilson one.

Unfortunately for Matondo and Rangers it didn’t get any better at Ibrox. 15 goals and assists in those 66 appearances is adequate but no more, and he just hasn’t shone the way he would want to.

He is said to be a lovely guy, and the funniest chap at Ibrox, but good banter doesn’t win games and he’s never been a starter for any of the three managers at Rangers he’s played under.

This is a player Rangers would be comfortable selling if the price is right, and we’d imagine breaking even on him would be just fine for the club.

As for Leeds, they would be getting a player who clearly has so much talent and potential, but hasn’t found the right club yet – the pressure of Rangers was too much, and maybe the slightly lesser demands at Leeds could help him.

They have a promotion push to look into, and maybe that’s the right environment for Matondo to be at.

It probably isn’t Rangers, unfortunately.
