John Souttar can hold his Rangers head very high indeed

If there was one rare Rangers positive to come from the Hampden debacle last night, it was the return to form of John Souttar who shone like a beacon above pretty much all other players in blue, as he formed a one-man barrier and finally got up to speed with his form and the team.

Amid horrendous displays by pretty much every other player, the ex-Hearts man, off the back of a bit of a slow start to the season, had a solid if slightly average first half, but stepped up colossally after the red card to keep defence tight and do pretty much the whole job himself.

Robin Pröpper struggled amid his first Champions League-level match, James Tavernier was nowhere, and even Connor Barron was not at his best.

Enter Souttar, who single-handedly showed why he’s arguably Scotland’s best defender, and criminally under-rated by both Rangers fans, and the national regime as well.

He did it all himself till Ben Davies’ introduction wrecked it totally, and Kyiv finally breached Rangers’ rearguard.

Souttar is a guy who, on his day, can keep out almost anyone – he’s strong, powerful, and he puts his body where it hurts. His reading of games can be hit and miss but at Hampden it was bang on and he showed why Rangers signed him.

It was, arguably, his best night as a Ranger, as he covered Pröpper’s uncertainty and Tavernier’s appalling positioning.

It showed he, and Pröpper, can form a very good defence, and that he is worthy of being a Rangers defender – he clearly is good enough, and just needs to focus on consistency and focus.

But we do wonder if Balogun, for now, might be the better partner for him after all. Pröpper looked a bit rabbit in headlights v Kyiv.

Either way, at least Souttar has recaptured some of his best form.

Pity the rest of the team were miles behind.
