As Todd Cantwell closes in on his Rangers exit to Blackburn, Rangers legend Mark Hateley has offered a word or two on the maverick playmaker, and why it went wrong for him at Ibrox.

Speaking to Online Slots Real Money, the former Ibrox superstar, who would cost at least £100M these days, according to himself, was addressing the rogue attacking midfielder, and why his Rangers career fell so hard apart.

He said:

“Todd Cantwell has had a difficult period, and I don’t think he’s made it easy for himself. If you’re not buying into what Philippe Clement is trying to do, then he knows where the door is.”

We do agree that there’s been a lot on the playmaker’s part here, but Clement himself must take responsibility for failing to manage the lad well here at all as well. It’s two peas from a very different pod.

Hateley went on:

“That’s the right way to do things, you need players to buy into it and collectively look to achieve the same thing. If that isn’t the case with Todd then he’s out the door. It is a pity, because he does have talent without a shadow of a doubt, but he has to have the discipline to back it up.”

Again very true, Cantwell clearly has ability, and a lot of it, but psychologically seems to fall somewhat short, as so many with bags of talent have. One only has to look at what the likes of Kieron Dyer, Lee Bowyer, Gabby Agbonlahor, and especially Jesse Lingard could have been with a better head screwed on their shoulders.

Cantwell does not want to end up like that.

“I hope that he can sort himself out and hold a place down in a team, but to do that, he needs to work harder on his discipline and what he can do for the rest of the team – it’s not about being an individual.”

Indeed.
