Blackburn manager John Eustace’s admission that he is interested in Rangers’ Rabbi Matondo is a very interesting insight into the football manager with Rangers’ counterparts over the year always claiming ‘they don’t talk about transfer targets’.
Here the ex-Rangers medical patient is confirming he IS interested in a Rangers player, a player widely-reported as being surplus at the club and who Rangers seek to get off the books.
There is a slight issue – his wage.
On the matter Eustace said:
“I think they (inc. Matondo) are on the list along with 60 other players that the recruitment team have been looking at. They are, yes.”
The wage could be a big sticking block, with Arnór Sigurðsson the best-paid at Ewood Park at around £20,000. Matondo is on around £30,000 at Ibrox.
For this move to work the Welshman will have to do the same as Sam Lammers and accept a radical wage cut, around 30% down on what he gets at Rangers.
It just shows the absolute muck Ross Wilson put this club in by signing these players at such exorbitant salaries – shaking those salaries off has proven to be a nightmare.
We managed it with Connor Goldson and Sam Lammers, but Matondo and Ben Davies are £60,000 between them and persuading a footballer to give that up isn’t easy.
Can Blackburn afford him?
He would certainly require to have a cut in salary, having been at a solid but modest £12K at Schalke. Couldn’t believe his luck to get that over doubled in Govan.
We’ll see if Eustace and Blackburn are interested enough to make this deal happen.
