Philippe Clement has a lack of options in the 10 slot. Tom Lawrence flits in and out and he’s about the only choice Rangers’ manager has there.
Except, there may be one more possibility, in the form of the Ivory Coast’s Mohamed Diomande, and his playing there would free up central midfield for Dujon Sterling to start alongside Connor Barron.
While Diomande isn’t quite recognised for being a playmaker, he’s only 22 and has time to develop still, and he has played that slot back in his Danish days with Nordsjælland many times, albeit no assists and just the one goal in around 20 appearances there.
He’s also played winger so he is flexible and he’s possibly capable of developing there as well, but crucially he’s a Philippe Clement favourite who’s surely able to deliver more than he has in his Rangers career thus far.
Trying him as a 10 and keeping Barron and Sterling behind him could well be the ideal solution with Rangers really lacking a quality playmaker at present.
Shifting him forward keeps his potential in the team, and let’s face it we paid £4.5M for him so he’s starting – this could be the way to get more from him, while also accommodating Sterling in the team, and let’s face it again, Sterling is our most powerful player.
Will this happen?
The complete lack of depth in the playmaker position makes it viable – Rangers cannot rely on just Tom Lawrence all season.
Dio going in there keeps his potential in the side while managing to fit Sterling and Barron in behind him.
It’s definitely a possibility…
