Just yesterday Ibrox Noise was whining about the rotten Rangers level of call ups in the national side, and right on cue, 3 Rangers players are called up for the U21s.
Now, few of us would argue that Leon King is good enough for Rangers, he’s unfortunately fallen a bit short and qualifies only as squad depth. He just didn’t develop beyond what he broke through as; Ross McCausland is quite close to this pitfall as well.
But this hasn’t stopped Scot Gemmill picking him, Connor Barron and Lewis Budinauckas in the squad for Euro 2025 qualifying, and that’s slightly more reassuring.
That Celtic only offer two contributions (with one of them being on loan elsewhere) shows that maybe, just maybe, Rangers’ youth system is producing a little something.
Obviously Barron wasn’t ours, but the fact is he’s ours now, while Budinauckas and King are of course from Auchinhowie and technically so too was-now senior Ranger Liam Kelly, by way of a sojourn around other British clubs before finding his way back.
The only downside here is that aside Barron, none of those three are really projected to make it into Rangers’ senior side – that cracking the match day squad is a tough thing to do for young Scots.
That said, King has been a fixture in recent seasons while Budinauckas appears now and then too.
Bottom line is we do want our players involved in the national team – it increases their value and it simply looks better. It also means we’ve produced players good enough for that level, which is what we want.
What the future holds for Rangers as a provider of players for the national team is anyone’s guess, but at least we’re offering a few of the young ‘uns still.
