Rangers manager Philippe Clement has confirmed a rather unwanted new injury in big Leon Balogun now being a ‘doubt’ to face Dynamo Kyiv after he picked up a knock against Motherwell at the weekend following his cameo in the second half.
While the likely partnership going forward will be John Souttar alongside new signing Robin Pröpper, Balogun’s experience and power at the back not to mention sterling pace (not just for his age) is so very useful and he has started a match this season (away to Dynamo, probably his worst display!).
So it’s an untimely knock and we certainly hope it doesn’t rule him out of the return leg tomorrow night at Hampden.
As far as Rangers’ defence goes, we have covered why it’s actually not that bad at all so far this season, and even more remarkably has already gone through three combinations of players – all featuring John Souttar alongside different partners; Ben Davies, Balogun, and new man Pröpper.
But we don’t want to lose options here, especially not among the main three of the Dutchman, Souttar and our resident Nigerian. We’re more non-plussed about Davies.
Hopefully he will be available tomorrow night albeit we’re not sure if he’d be in line to start; we do believe Clement’s preferred duo is Souttar and Pröpper and that will be the partnership going forward, injury notwithstanding.
But Balogun as an alpha option to call upon is a great tool to have, although he did struggle v Kyiv till he got up to speed with the match.
Shock horror he was beaten for pace and power at one point, which is unlike him.
That said, it would be a big loss tomorrow night and the manager confirmed that decision would be reached in the afternoon.
