John Souttar is having a decent time of it at Rangers – reportedly about to receive a new contract with presumed wage increase, the former Hearts defender has also received a call up with Scotland for the Nations League double header in September, in which, in truth, he probably won’t play.
Souttar is one who has worked hard to win over a lot of his doubters; not all by any means, the lad has more detractors in Rangers’ support than he should, given he has been by a distance the best defender this season for Rangers.
He’s been consistent, strong, and while not perfect, he’s the best stopper right now, and the most available.
It’s quite the turnaround from his disastrous first season, where he failed to notify the club that he had an injury, and that cost him the entire campaign, give or take. This was not his shining moment.
But with Connor Goldson now departed, Souttar is his definitive replacement.
Unlike Goldson he’s strong, powerful, and he puts his head where it hurts. No one could ever accuse him of lacking guts – he’s a more refined version of Niko Katic, in some ways.
He’s getting his reward now for a tough first 18+ months at Ibrox, and he will only get better as time goes on.
He’s still only 27, he’s young enough to still learn his trade more as he goes, and he’ll refine his quirks and errors more and more as he entrenches himself in the team.
We don’t have many representatives for our national team, which is far from ideal – we just don’t have enough good Scottish players in the squad.
But we do have arguably the best Scottish defender there is. So that is at least something.
Will he play in the double header, who knows?
At least he got the call again.
