There was a little bit of context to take from the opening round of fixtures – while Celtic did beat Killie with something to spare, it must be remembered Kilmarnock had had a European fixture midweek and Celtic were fresh.
Fresh Rangers on the other hand faced an equally fresh Hearts.
So we’re not going to measure any ‘gulf’ based exclusively on those two results.
But it also doesn’t exactly paper over the cracks that are clearly there in our club these days.
Our squad and club are in a bad way right now, and tomorrow’s clash with Dynamo Kyiv, who go into this one completely fresh themselves after the Ukrainan FA postponed their league opener with Oleksandriya to prepare them better, probably comes too early for the manager’s projection of October before the squad is in any kind of decent shape.
We’ll discuss the injury crisis once again enveloping the club later, but as things stand, the bookies’ odds of 6/5 for a Dynamo win is up against 2-1 for a Rangers one.
For those unfamiliar with odds, this basically means that neither side is odds-on (overwhelming favourite) to win, but that the odds against are much more friendly with Dynamo and suggest Rangers are the outsiders for this match.
Probably about right, unfortunately.
Opening day wasn’t great for Rangers, and there remains a very negative vibe in the air around the club, very much not helped by the Ibrox Stadium shambles.
If Rangers can leave Poland tomorrow evening with even a draw, we’ll take that as a borderline win, because lord knows enough many fans barking ‘just support the team ffs’ isn’t really helping a more ‘studious’ debate regarding the problems our club has right now.
Yes, we’d take the draw, a win seems a bridge too far at this point in Rangers’ season up against proper Champions League opponents.
But as we did point out, domestically we’ll wait a few fixtures before assessing where Rangers are in relation to the East End lot, because an opening day when they beat a tired Killie who aren’t even used to European football doesn’t accurately demonstrate a gulf, or how big one might be.
Concerning times.
