With Rangers close to finally getting rid of Ben Davies, albeit only on loan for now, alongside reports the club could also be shipping Rabbi Matondo away as well, we really have to look at the disgraceful conduct of Ross Wilson and the borderline malpractice the man was guilty of.
When we look at the kinds of wages he authorised for Davies (£30,000pw), Matondo (£30,000pw) and the increase for Connor Goldson (£38,000pw) it is no wonder Rangers ended up in the financial hole we currently suffer.
Our wage bill completely eclipses/eclipsed that of Celtic, miserably so, whereby absolute chafe like Davies was/is receiving that level of salary when back in the day that was the level Barry Ferguson and Ronald de Boer earned…
Of course times are different, but when we look at the talent from 20+ years ago, the quality of player we were paying our biggest wage to, and then we compare it to what Ross Wilson deemed worthy in a week what most people get in a year…
Add to that the failing trading model which has, as we demonstrated, worsened since Chairman John Bennett revealed the loss, and Rangers’ financial management, wage structure, and player trading has been abysmal for far too long.
Davies was a modest League One-level defender who couldn’t believe his luck to get Liverpool then Rangers.
Literally two of the UK’s biggest clubs, and this guy got both. And very rich in the process.
He’s set up for life now.
Let’s be clear, Davies isn’t a horrible defender, but nowhere near a Rangers defender, and that’s the nub of the point.
Well, Birmingham are said to be very close to the deal, so here’s hoping he moves on very quickly.
