One of the big aims this transfer window was to get big Rangers earners off the wage bill, and reduce the overall wasted overhead.

Ibrox Noise now brings you our assessment of exactly how Rangers did here, how the wage bill looks now.

First off prior to this window, Rangers’ four biggest earners were:

Danilo, £40,000pw

Connor Goldson, £38,000pw

James Tavernier, £37,000pw

Jack Butland, £35,000pw

Unfortunately, only one of those is gone, Goldson of course.

So on the face of it the fat high earners are still there, weighing the payroll down.

But the better assessment is into the midranges. Let’s go down into the numbers:

Ben Davies, £28,000pw

Todd Cantwell, £25,000pw

Sam Lammers, £22,000pw

Ianis Hagi, £22,000pw

Borna Barisic, £22,000pw

John Lundstram, £22,000pw

Kemar Roofe, £20,000pw

This is where the real work was done. These are all gone bar Ianis Hagi who it’s being claimed has renegotiated his contract and is on a smaller wage now, with a higher chance of being included in the team.

This has gone from £161,000pw to barely £20,000 if not less. This is excellent work.

There are also exits from Scott Wright who was modestly on £8,000, and Ryan Jack who was on £12,000, while £5,000 Jon McLaughlin also moved on. That’s another £25K freed. £185K.

Rangers have more or less freed up £200,000pw, which is £800,000 a month and obviously £9.6M a year. Aka around £10M. Add Goldson to this and it’s around £12M a year.

This is a massive cull of wasted money, and it’s a hugely positive step.

Of course, we signed a bunch too, but please don’t even think any of these guys are much more than about £15,000pw, which we’d imagine are Propper and Cerny only. And that’s really pushing it.

Rangers are being a lot more careful with the wages now – Ross Wilson tried to kill our club by giving out despicable salaries to players who didn’t deserve it, and it’s taken two years for Rangers to get those numbers down.

So, end of the window?

We’ve freed up £12M of annual wages, we’ve signed a tonne of cheaper players with those resources, and we’ve shed so many players who added next to nothing.

We now only have 3 players earning more than £30,000, (Danilo, Butland and Tav) while Matondo and Dessers are by far the highest below them, at around £28,000.

Tom Lawrence, Ridvan Yilmaz, Nico Raskin… these guys are no higher than the £22,000 mark either, in most cases significantly below.

So overall, from a cutting the cloth point of view, this window was a success for sure.

Whether the squad is ‘up to it’ is a completely different matter.
