So here we go again, Rangers in our second major friendly of the summer travel over the M8 to Edinburgh and the first of many ‘home’ matches at a neutral venue, that the fans will have to deal with till mid-September at the very earliest.
The opponent, Man Utd, couldn’t have been much more difficult – well, actually, it could, they’re sending mostly their kids, but they’re still leaps and bounds ahead of us.
They are of course going through a transitional summer themselves, a new ‘owner’ who is now in charge of them as a football club in Sir Jim Ratcliffe, himself a lifelong Man Utd fan.
In short, they have a guy steering them who wants only the best for them – that would be nice for Rangers eh?
They have made just the one notable signing this window but it’s far and away better than anything have signed, which is not surprising given we have no money and they’re more or less worth billions. It’s a different planet.
What do we expect from this match?
Nothing, it’s meaningless and redundant.
We’re up against a Man Utd sending a skeleton squad, while we ourselves are barely ready for too much unfortunately, and we are a speck directionless and rudderless, and while winning would of course be nice, Rangers have infinitely more to deal with than friendly against a side who are far too good for us.
A win will boost morale, and we could probably use that, but the opponent is far too strong and all we’re likely to get is our backsides handed to us, even with the reserve players they’re sending north.
And that’s not terribly helpful.
Thankfully all Rangers briefs were snapped up so the attendance will be strong at least.
Just a pity we’re not sure what we can take from this one.
