The salaries of Rangers defenders James Tavernier and Connor Goldson have as good as been confirmed after Heart and Hand revealed how much Rangers stand to save in the event of selling the duo.

With such widespread talk about Tavernier’s pending exit to Turkey, be it Trabzonspor or old boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Besiktas, not to mention Connor Goldson’s own reported switch to Aris Limassol in Cyprus, the respected fan account confirmed Rangers would save around £75,000 a week in the event of both transfers materialising.

It’s been long known that Connor Goldson signed a deal in 2022 to hike his wages up to around £38,000pw making him among the top-paid players at the club, albeit at the time he was in fact arguably the highest paid individual, period.

With this information, Tavernier’s wage is also confirmed at an eye-watering £37,000pw having signed several extensions over the years, with it previously having been believed the captain was closer to £30,000.

This means Tavernier is among the top-paid players at the club, with only Danilo (said to be around £40,000) and Goldson above him it seems. We would imagine Jack Butland is probably in that bracket as well.

But it shows what a ridiculous drain on Rangers’ resources our wage bill is, and while what ‘that lot’ does doesn’t interest us, it’s very relevant to look at how much more modest their wage bill is and how much more they get for their money than Rangers do. Celtic’s bill is said to be around £5M a year less than Rangers pay, and we’d suggest that probably says it all.

Rangers have far far too many players on £20,000 or more a week, while Celtic only have 3. Rangers have/had 12, including 3 who left (Roofe, Borna and Lundstram) but we still sit with at least 9.

We are way way overpaying our players for what we get back.

£75,000 a week for Goldson and Tavernier?
