With Rangers now having £2.5M in the kitty and freed up a mammoth £38,000pw, there’s scope to finally bring in a half-decent left-sided defender to replace not just Connor Goldson (who doesn’t strictly need replacing) but Ben Davies as well.
Rangers have two right-sided defenders in Leon Balogun and John Souttar – both are good honest stoppers who put their bodies where it hurts. Balogun is more experienced and bigger, but Souttar could and would be a brilliant consistent defender with a solid partner.
Ben Davies, the only lefty, is simply not good enough to be a Rangers defender for the level we aspire to, but he is costing a fortune in wages – we really hope we can sell him this window but that’s a slim chance.
The reality is Rangers need to use Goldon’s resources on a new left-sided stopper capable of the rigours of Rangers and of the level we need to be at.
But of course, like they didn’t with Kenny McLean, fans don’t seem happy with the club potentially aiming at Scott McKenna, despite his Premier League appearances, his international caps and his being free.
This guy has a market value around £10M and our fans don’t think he’s good enough?
He has 37 Scotland caps. Not good enough?
He has 25 Premier League appearances. Not good enough?
He has even played in the Champions League. Not good enough?
Many of the same fans rate Ben Davies whose peak market value was £2.5M (yes, we paid £4M as Liverpool laughed), has never played in the Premier League and never got an England call up in the youth levels never mind senior caps.
Scott McKenna might not be quite Davie Weir, but he’s not miles below, and he’s a tough, no-nonsense defender who wouldn’t cost anything like what Davies does.
Flawless? No. But few defenders we can sign would be – McKenna would be a great free – and yes, we know he ‘was’ a Celtic fan, went to Celtic matches as a kid with his dad, but he said that once you become a professional, you don’t care any more:
“Of course, when you play against Celtic for Aberdeen I want Aberdeen to win. When you become a professional and it’s your job, supporting Celtic goes out the window. You play for Aberdeen, you want the best for Aberdeen.”
So yes, he was once a fan, but doesn’t care now, and wouldn’t care for Celtic if he became a Rangers player.
Are we being a little woke ourselves? Wanting ‘one of them’ to join us at Ibrox? We’ve seen it before, haven’t we? Mo Johnston, Neil McCann – some great players of that persuasion shone for us, so we’re a bit less against a boyhood Celtic fan joining us if they simply really want to join us.
As he said, he doesn’t really care these days, and he’s a tonne better than what lefties we currently have.
But if you can find something better who supports Rangers and won’t cost a fortune, we’re all for that too.
I would sign him. He’s exactly what we need. 100% get him in.
Of course we should try and sign him, it’s a no-brainer.
