In a wide-ranging interview with Rangers TV yesterday, Ibrox chairman John Bennett fully, completely addressed every issue that has been on fans’ minds the past few months, and Ibrox Noise reviews his performance in general in the 22 minutes he spoke.
The one thing to note is it didn’t matter what he said, the naysayers would have decried him – the ones demanding he speak are the ones dismissing what he says.
They have no interest in hearing facts, they just want to criticise regardless. That’s their prerogative, but it’s not terribly helpful.
Ibrox Noise was on record as heavily criticising predecessor Douglas Park early in in the cinch fiasco, disliking intensely how he was using our club to further his own commercial interests.
So we are on record as holding the suits to account for sure. We know Bennett, naturally, is the fall guy and the blame game target for all that’s gone wrong the past while, and while we agree that the board has to shoulder a tonne of the responsibility, what the chairman said yesterday fit.
It made sense, it cleared up a fair bit, and it corroborated a lot of Ibrox Noise sources from the past year.
Firstly, our information that the club had spent around £10M+ – Bennett confirmed that.
Secondly, our information that Ibrox would not be ready till a lot later than initially reported. Confirmed.
Now, this isn’t us giving ourselves a pat on the back for being right, it’s giving Bennett benefit of the doubt because he’s being honest and admitting what we already told you rather than lying about it.
Bennett, most Rangers fans forget, is truly one of us – he was at pains to point that out in the interview, and Rangers fans these days have a very bad habit of turning on our own, very, very easily.
Look at how many fans slaughtered their peers last season for criticising Fabio Silva and Borna Barisic – the players’ appalling reactions got so much backup and defence from the fanbase and the critics in our support were being lambasted.
It’s been par for the course.
Bennett is now public enemy number one, simply because we’re rubbish on the pitch. Had we won the treble that the manager choked on last season, or even just the title on top of the League Cup, fans would be 100% forgiving of the stadium fiasco. Would have been dumped as ‘one of those things’ and ‘we’ll just work around it’.
But with the horrible season we ended up having, the Ibrox shambles was 10x worse and the board/Bennett got blamed 100%.
We’ll have more analysis on that in due course.
But Bennett overall in that chat?
We thought he did well. He gave decent insight, he spoke like a Rangers fan with a business mind, and while we’re hardly trusting him implicitly all of a sudden, he did his case decently in the eyes of Ibrox Noise.
The wider fanbase probably won’t agree, but it’s all about opinions.
