Rangers’ recently-reported interest in former €30M-rated (£3M these days) Spaniard Joan Jordán has taken a twist after his current club Sevilla confirmed he’s surplus and they are ready to let him leave.
The former Espanyol midfielder, 30, is at a crossroads in his career and while his contract expires in three years, it is not thought that any suitor club will have to pay a lot for his signature, after Sevilla chief Victor Orta confirmed the lad can leave.
He said:
“They have been told that they (fellow surplus Adnan Junazaj) are not part of the project. We respect their contracts, but it is better for them to choose other options. The club informed Jordán’s representatives of its intention, we thought that his cycle had ended. It has been very clear to him. They have known this since… I think before Barça. His representative had a meeting with the club and it was clearly stated to him.”
In simple terms, he’s available for anyone who wants to take him, but the problem is Rangers can’t afford his salary and have already had a bid rejected.
The problem here is wages – Jordan is on around £60,000pw and Rangers wanted a loan deal where Sevilla covered a portion of this. They have no intention of doing so and rejected that bid, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.
In fairness, Jordan would represent a big coup for Rangers, while surprisingly he has never been called up by his national side at any level, he nevertheless has a lot of experience in the Champions League (21 apps, 11 losses) and won the Europa League twice.
But now he needs to leave Sevilla, and we highly doubt with Rangers’ dire transfer window so far and financial weaknesses that we can possibly afford the wages he would expect.
Joan Jordan would have to take a massive, massive wage cut to join our club, and he will have plenty of suitors interested in his signature at full wage if not more.
We can’t see this one reviving at all.
