We’re seeing reports from Holland, specifically Transferwatch.nl, that Sam Lammers is now subject to interest from AZ, after it was ‘revealed’ that Utrecht just can’t afford the unwanted Rangers striker.
There’s a bit of a problem with this – neither can AZ.
Regulars to Ibrox Noise will know that outwith of PSV, Ajax and Feyenoord (barely), Dutch clubs do not pay their players anything like Rangers’ salaries, and generally the roof is about £12,000pw, give or take.
Lammers is on £22,000pw and aside the big three, no one in Holland has a wage structure that will pay him what he expects, so how AZ hopes to be able to fund this signing we’re not sure.
Reports in Holland claim Rangers will accept £2.5M to give him off the wage drain as much as anything else, but this is all moot if the suitor clubs can’t afford him or accommodate his wages into their structure.
That said, there are also reports back in his native lands that Turkish clubs, who can afford his salary, are interested, the same clubs shelling out big money for Barisic and Lundstram’s all-new shiny wages.
So there is that avenue – but it depends on Lammers.
Can AZ quite simply persuade Lammers to take a wage cut?
That is what any move to a Dutch club effectively rests on.
