Rangers, out of the absolute blue, have secured the club’s 6th ‘new’ summer signing in Dutch defender Robin Pröpper, 30, captain of Twente.
In breaking news which escaped every Rangers ITK there is, including Ibrox Noise, the former Dutch U19 international is about to jet in to seal a permanent signing to Rangers, arriving as he will from FC Twente, in what we believe may have been facilitated in part by Sam Lammers’ move there.
The £3M-rated defender, captaining the Eredivisie side, who, unfortunately, is a right-footed stopper, comes from a solid stable, and is a direct replacement for departed vice-captain Connor Goldson and will cost Rangers a set fee.
Pröpper’s entire career has been in Holland, starting at De Graafshap before moving onto Heracles and then settling with Twente till Rangers secured his signature.
He will complete the medical inside the next 24 hours and sign for the club permanently.
We don’t know much about the guy really, and we are admittedly disappointed he’s not a left-sided defender because that’s really what we needed, but it’s clear that he is signing as a starter and just about completes Rangers manager Philippe Clement’s central defence – there will be no more in unless someone (Davies) leaves.
We still need a quality lefty, but we’re not sure such a thing is coming – once again a rando player arrives when we really could have used a left-sided defender. Ben Davies is all we have there. We still hope a leftie arrives.
But Pröpper played 33 times last season for Twente as they finished third and his joining Rangers really has come completely from left field.
He will surely start, leaving Leon Balogun, John Souttar and Davies to compete for the other slot. We really hope it’s not Davies who still gets that position due to his leftie nature.
A good signing? 223 appearances in the Eredivisie is good, but we don’t know a tonne more about him yet.
So we can only say welcome to Rangers Robin!
