Rangers: £40M keeper as Liam Kelly outclasses Jack Butland

We’ve not even touched upon Liam Kelly’s excellent Rangers debut yet, the new signing replacing the abysmal Jack Butland at half time and pulling off a few top saves v Ajax, showing up Rangers’ traditional number one and his atrocious errors in the first half.

For us, Jack Butland’s Rangers form collapsed notably from about February/March onwards, and we just weren’t as blown away by his debut season as some – we gave it 8 out of 10, but no more.

We’re even more disquieted this morning with Philippe Clement’s comments saying Butland’s irreplaceable, coming just days after he WAS replaced by Kelly in Holland to extremely impressive effect.

Indeed, many comments on our social channels are calling out the manager’s statements these days, not just taking his stuff at face value, and that’s with good reason.

But his latest comments that he won’t sell Butland for less than £30M-£40M while only made as a reference, really do show that Clement is operating on logic that we’re just not relating to at all right now.

To exalt one player like this, especially after a very poor showing from that player, rather places him on a pedestal that he hasn’t actually earned.

Was he good on his debut season? Yes. Great? Almost.

We wouldn’t class him anywhere near McGregor or Goram at all, and we’d also place Woods and even Klos ahead of him overall. Jack Butland is a pretty good goalie but not an incredible one, and his flapping so badly against Ajax cost both goals, in concert with atrocious defending from the men in front of him.

And for Liam Kelly, his supposed deputy, to come on and completely outshine him suggests the ex-England cap might not have his place between the sticks so assured next season.

Kelly has sacrificed everything to come back to Rangers, and we will cover him in a later entry, but for now, while Clement bigs Butland up as a £40M keeper, we’d have to say he falls a bit short of that for us.

Is it Kelly’s time to shine?

Who knows.
