Philippe Clement confirms Connor Goldson to leave Rangers

Rangers manager Philippe Clement has confirmed tonight Connor Goldson will indeed be leaving Rangers after the club accepted an offer for the defender.

Goldson, 31, was spotted flying to Cyprus in recent days to undergo a medical, as reported by Ibrox Noise in a recent exclusive, and Clement has now confirmed that the big defender, despite travelling initially to Birmingham with the Rangers squad was given permission to leave and return to Cyprus to negotiate and complete his transfer.

The fee is understood to be around £2.5M, and Rangers will free up his £38,000pw wages for other players in due course.

Clement confirmed Goldson’s departure prior to the friendly defeat at St Andrews, calling the offer ‘concrete’ – and of course, common sense would conclude that the club wouldn’t let him travel to Cyprus if the fee wasn’t accepted.

Rangers have indeed accepted the offer and Goldson is happy to move to Aris Limassol for the next stage of his (underwhelming) career.

It gives some idea of the staggeringly low stock Goldson has that the best he could do was a Cypriot minnow, a side considerably smaller than the one Rangers’ signing Jefte was on loan at in the same league.

This is why Goldson could not get the Premier League in 2022, and why he happily signed his deal of a gigantic pay raise at Rangers – because no side down south at that level was willing to sign him. He just wasn’t good enough.

Instead he’s accepted the bowels of the Cypriot First Division, a side Rangers faced last season and who finished just fourth in the league.

It’s quite the plummet in stock for the defender who once had designs on a Premier League spot.

Que sera.
