Rangers manager Philippe Clement has confirmed he blocked Robby McCrorie from furthering his career, admitting that he basically stopped him leaving in January and made him wait another 6 months.

The goalkeeper finally resolved his future this summer, securing a £250,000 switch to Kilmarnock (reports this morning that he set Killie back double that are massively wide of the mark) and made his debut in a defeat, but it’s Clement’s comments on his exit that raise an eyebrow.

He said:

“I knew Robby McCrorie was desperate to go in January. I stopped him in January.”

We know no man is bigger than the club, and that that the club is all-important, we’d never suggest otherwise, but to block McCrorie from furthering his career and finally becoming a starter rather shows the man-management of Clement, and is a tad concerning.

We’d never elevate any players’ interests individually over the club collectively, but this smacked to us of just wasting someone’s time. McCrorie, we’re pretty safe to say, deserved better than this.

Rangers had four goalies on the payroll – Butland, McCrorie, McLaughlin and Wright – admittedly it also shows what Clement thought of McLaughlin and Wright that he refused to make either of them the deputy.

But still, that McCrorie’s career was effectively blocked by the manager who essentially wouldn’t let him go or indeed play him is a bit depressing, and rather sums up where we are under this manager, this board, this squad and this regime.

Is there any good news anywhere?
