Rangers fans are today in meltdown after Czech international winger Vaclav Cerny followed the club on social media, hinting a move for the right winger could be on the cards.

Rated around £8M, the 26-year-old, currently at Wolfsburg has plenty of caps for his country, albeit Czechia are not the force they were back in the Koller and Nedved days by any means but they still made the Euros even if their performances were forgettable, and Cerny did get an appearance.

Of course, he’s contracted to 2027 so would cost Rangers a lot of money, but Philippe Clement really, really loves his wingers and clearly wants some for the new season – evidently Scott Wright and Rabbi Matondo aren’t cutting it, with just Oscar Cortes to rely on and he of course is immensely rusty.

Cerny? We’d be looking at a £5M minimum fee but again, it’s all dependent on shipping players out first before we can afford a player valued in this range.

Why is this one opening up? He didn’t have a terribly good debut season in the Bundesliga with Wolsburg, his first league outside the Eredivisie – 6 goals and assists in 24 isn’t vintage, but his record in the Dutch top flight is much stronger with, ironically, Twente – 43 goals and assists in 78 is good.

He’s never played in the Champions League, and his Europa League qualifying and group numbers are poor at best. This isn’t someone who’s done it at the top level of football.

But then neither had Oscar Cortes – that’s right, he never played for Lens’ senior team, only their B team – and he’s been not half bad in the fleeting minutes he’s had for Rangers.

As for Cerny, he’s better than some no-name kid from Brazil, but we urge caution that he’s a sensation.

But he’s done it for Twente. Mind you, Sam Lammers has done it for a couple of midtable Eredivisie sides too…
