First Major Trophy: Scottish Cup Victory (1894)

The club was first founded in 1872 by Moses McNeil, Peter McNeil, Peter Campbell, and William McBeath. It wasn’t until 19 years later however that they won their first major trophy. It was this year they had their first League title win that really helped boost their reputation going forward.

The Treble Achievement (1976)

Over the next decade there were many different managers all working to get the team to globy and they really dominated the Scottish league from the 1920s-1950s. Yet it was the year of 1976 that’s one of the most notable for the club. Here they won the treble, meaning they won the Scottish League, the Scottish Cup and the Scottish League Cup. This was a real defining moment for the team.

European Cup Winners’ Cup Triumph (1972)

In 1972, Rangers FC were on track for the European final and ended up in the finals along Dynamo Moscow. They ended up winning this, earning them a much more serious reputation within the European context, something that hadn’t really happened in the past.

Nine in a Row (1989-1997)

The years of 1989 to 1997 were key years for Rangers FC as they saw a real winning streak that boosted them both at home and across Europe. Under the influence of key figures such as Graeme Souness and Walter Smith they were able to take the team to glory time and time again. In fact, over this eight year period, they won nine league titles in a row.

Financial Turmoil and Relegation (2012)

Following a great time for the club, the year 2012 saw them face financial difficulties. They were relegated to the Third Division which had a real impact not only on the club’s morale, but the fans also.

Return to Glory: Premiership Title Win (2021)

2016 saw the team journey back to the top flight of Scottish football, winning the Premiership title 5 years later. This was a key moment to win a title after a time of real hardship and helped cement them back at the top flight of Scottish football.

These are some of the most iconic moments in the history of Rangers, highlighting their highs and some of their lows. As with any sports team, there are a myriad of moments that make up their history and they’ve helped them become the team they are today.
