We had to laugh after unofficial confirmation that serial coward and loser Steve Clarke is to remain Scotland manager, revealing definitively that the SFA have no interest in Scotland doing well at major championships, just that they get there.
After an absolutely abysmal Euros campaign in which Scotland didn’t score a single clean goal in the whole competition, and managed just the single point, it had been expected that Clarke would be relieved of his duties and shown the door.
But the unambitious SFA are quite happy to stick with Clarke, well aware that while he can get the country to a major championships, that’s the limit.
Now, some Scotland fans have defended Clarke suggesting that no previous Scotland ever got to the KO stage of a championships either, so it’s really not that dramatic that Scotland still can’t.
This is, of course, Scottish mentality at its best – ‘we couldn’t do it before, so we’ll be content with the fact we still can’t’.
Of course, again, it goes deeper – it’s not about history or what previous Scotlands did or did not do, it’s the fact Clarke’s tactics, as they were at Euro 2020, were 100% negative and all about not conceding.
Forget having a go, taking this massive chance to do something, let’s just surrender.
Scotland managed 3 shots on target in three full matches in Germany, which is literally indescribably embarrassing, and that’s the model the manager wanted, the lack of courage and negativity he deemed to be the way forward.
After 15 minutes v Germany and 1-0 down, Ibrox Noise noted how cowardly Scotland’s tactics were, and how identical they were to those used at Euro 2020. It will come as a surprise to no one that this view received a tonne of abuse. Which stopped by about the third goal, in fairness…
And that’s the mindset of the SFA – rotten football, non-winning football.
Scotland really are about the taking part, not the winning.
And Clarke keeps his job.
