If Rangers fans were offered an experienced Premier League player with 65 appearances at that level not to mention being a boyhood Rangers fan… they’d probably reject Kenny McLean out of hand!

We jest, this isn’t about the Norwich midfielder who may or may not be moving to Sheffield United, it’s about ex-Rangers star John Fleck who is currently training at Auchenhowie to get fit and try to find his next club.

He has already confirmed some years ago he would be thrilled to bits to move back to Rangers and now he’s a free agent whose wages would be nominal – he is also completely injury free and was effectively released by Blackburn Rovers manager John Eustace in the summer.

He was, unfortunately, injured at Rovers in January and missed the whole season, and is now that free agent, with Eustace clearly not interested in retaining him.

And so Fleck trains at his old stomping ground with Rangers having been on record as definitely wanting to rejoin the club in the past – he left, of course, in 2012, a boy, and became a man down south.

He was loved by Rangers fans (alongside Oli McBurnie) after both rejected a Sheffield United huddle and remained standing. He is absolutely one of us.

Is he good enough?

Well he curiously never quite made it into the Scotland setup – he only has five caps for his country, while McLean has more than a few – why Fleck never got more attention at that level we’re not sure.

He has the CV to justify it even if 350 of his career appearances were League One or Championship.

What position? Essentially he’s a central midfielder with an emphasis on attacking – but the reality is he’s not going to be expensive, he’s low-risk, and he is gagging to return to Rangers.

Let’s face it, we have absolutely no Rangers identity, with zero of our players now being proper Rangers men aside Liam Kelly.

If Fleck helps that and brings some quality in there too, we can think of worse ideas.
