Liam Kelly to Rangers is a (sort of) goer after the Motherwell stopper signed a new contract extension at Fir Park.
Confused yet?
Kelly, 28, has been 100% confirmed by the Steelmen as leaving the club this summer, but agreed a contract extension for the duration of Euro 2024 in order to secure them a compensation fee on his exit.
Kelly was out of contract this summer, and set to leave Motherwell to Rangers for nothing, as a free agent, but unlike the rot that left Ibrox this summer, agreed to help his employer out by signing a short term extension, to last till the end of the summer, that will secure Motherwell around £500,000 for his signature.
The point here is Kelly is looking after the club which gave him his career back – after Rangers rejected him, then Queens Park Rangers went a bit south on him, Kelly was reinvigorated at Fir Park, and became a mainstay there, becoming captain into the bargain.
They missed out on a top 6 slot by just 4 points, and ended up a pretty dismal 9th, but fairly safe from relegation.
And as for Kelly, he feels he owes them a lot, so signed a short term deal which secures the club a decent fee for his services when he (inevitably) moves to Rangers in the coming weeks after Euro 2024 is finished.
Yes, he travels to Germany with the squad as the third-choice goalie behind Zander Clark and Angus Gunn, and will wait out the tournament before making that near-certain switch to Rangers at the end of the summer, with Rangers having to fork out some cash for his signature.
If he hadn’t signed it, they would get nothing and Rangers get a free goalie. He’s looked out for Motherwell’s interests, not the club he’s moving to.
And honestly that’s fair enough – Rangers have to decide if Kelly is worth the £500,000 compensation he’ll now cost.
And that’s up to the club.
