So as every (Rangers) man and his dog now know, Rangers are taking significant interest in Norwich’s Kenny McLean, with it understood he 100% wants to come.

Last summer Ibrox Noise was on record as saying he’d burned his bridges with this club, after it appeared he and his agent used Rangers’ name to get a contract extension with the Canaries.

We weren’t keen on his being linked to Ibrox based on trying to get security at Carrow Road but hey, time heals, and we care about it a lot less than we did.

And this summer the interest is very real, as is his.

So what’s it all about?

The big deal of course is Rangers losing two midfielders this summer – John Lundstram and Ryan Jack.

Despite Ibrox Noise suggesting midfield was maybe complete, in the form of Nico Raskin, Connor Barron, Mohamed Diomande and potentially Dujon Sterling, it seems Philippe Clement and Director of Football Recruitment want McLean for many reasons:

One, is the experience. We did state clearly midfield now lacked that – we’d lost two 30-something midfielders and now all our players in there were ‘green’. McLean is a lot older at 32, so that’s very useful to replace Lundstram and Jack.

Secondly is the level of that experience. McLean is now an established Premier League player with 70 outings at that level, even if Norwich are currently Championship. There’s little doubt a player of that level of quality is desired by management.

Thirdly, harks back to the second one – he’s a Scotland international with 41 caps, he’s played Euros – that’s a pretty high level to say the least.

Final one? He fulfils UEFA’s homegrown quota which Rangers are threadbare on – this one is a big deal, Rangers needing a number of ‘native’ players who have been developed in Scotland. We lost one in Jacko, and McLean would be a natural replacement.

Long story short, it fills a lot of criteria and ticks a lot of boxes.

Whether he is actually ‘good’ enough is another matter…
