If ever there was to be a ‘marquee signing’ of a high quality and low injury history for Rangers, Napoli’s out-of-favour striker Giovanni Simeone could be it.
Just 8 starts last campaign in a diabolical overall season for the Neapolitan giants, Simeone, son of Atletico manager Diego, was rumoured to be handing in a transfer request in January.
That didn’t improve his lot at all, and he’s laboured in Naples ever since, just 4 goals and assists in 37 appearances.
The funny thing is, not only is he surplus at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, but his market value is only a modest €10M these days, which breaks down to barely £8M, and he’d probably set Rangers back a notch less than that.
He’s under contract for another 2 seasons, and Antonio Conte has just taken over at the club, but Simeone is a player who could be a really stunning signing for Rangers, especially given he has no Europe to look forward to with Napoli.
He has 6 caps for his native Argentina, one goal, and while his goals ratio in football is not incredible, his abilities are clearly very decent. At 5ft 9 he’s no giant, but he’s extremely well-rated in football circles and he will have a lot of interest in him this summer.
Simeone is unlikely to attract a big Premier League side, or a Real Madrid, but for the more modest Champions League and top Europa League sides, he is a strong target.
Rangers?
Why not.
He’s a good striker – he’s not a massive, massive goalscorer, never has been, but anyone being capped 6 times alongside Messi isn’t all that bad is he.
Maybe one the club might be interested in.
PS: did we mention barely any injury history at all…
