As Rangers’ summer work intensifies, the latest name making its way into the airwaves is that of Arsenal Academy ‘prospect’ Reuell Walters, who at 19 is regarded as a major talent at the Emirates, and whose current contract is about to expire.
The big story here is Arsenal VERY much want to keep him, Mikel Arterta rating the defender very highly indeed, and selecting him for the bench on several occasions. He has not yet made a senior Arsenal appearance as yet.
Mikel Arteta has offered him a new deal, he wants him to remain in London, but Walters wants to play and is already rated at £5M despite not having kicked a senior ball in anger yet.
So he’s at a crossroads in his career already – on the verge of breaking into the Arsenal senior side, but not quite regarded as the stuff to usurp the likes of Gabriel and Saliba just yet, not a shock given they are widely regarded as two of the world’s very best defenders.
So if he wants minutes, he will have accept a move – he isn’t displacing these two any time soon, if ever, and this is where Rangers come in.
If he accepts Arteta’s offer, he’s accepting the bench for seasons to come, unless someone comes in with £100M+ for either of the first choice CBs.
Even then there’s no guarantee.
So Clement would love to take this lad north and make him part of Rangers’ rearguard.
Yes he’s extremely green around the gills, and yes he’s completely untested in senior football – but that seems to be the path for a lot of Rangers’ signings. Going for well-rated youth and hoping they deliver at Ibrox.
There would of course be the usual cross-border compensation, around £350,000 usually these days for players under 23 going from north to south in the UK or vice versa, but that wouldn’t be an issue.
We’ll see if this one progresses beyond ‘talk’.
