As Ibrox Noise reported to you some time ago, Rangers offered former Aberdeen midfielder Connor Barron a contract as a free agent, and the 21-year-old has been weighing up his options since then.
And this morning’s breaking news is that we’re learning a medical has been booked in for him this week, amid the Bosman addition to Ibrox of his signature ramping up massively.
Rangers are now hot favourites to sign him outright, and the player is said to be very keen to both remain in Scotland and ‘have a chat’ with Philippe Clement.
It’s a very strong development in the club’s pursuit of the midfielder, who is seen by many as the next big thing from Aberdeen’s excellent youth academy, and Rangers are massively keen to avoid a repeat of what remains an appalling lack of judgement in letting Lewis Ferguson slip through the Govan giant’s fingers.
While no one is strictly claiming yet that Barron is as good as Ferguson, his qualities are clear and this would be, for many Rangers fans, a significant signing in this window, one which beats off strong competition from rival clubs in both Italy and both top-flight divisions in England.
Barron has been one of Aberdeen’s most coveted assets for some time, and while he has historically missed a few matches with injury, his state of health is generally very good, and he missed almost no matches last season with any knocks, a good sign.
He started 38 matches (both club and country) and that’s a strong indicator of a player Rangers want.
A lot of fans have been wanting the club to ‘sign Scottish’, well, Barron may just be exactly that.
