Rangers are working on a reported loan deal for £15M-rated Man City star Callum Doyle, with the 20-year-old under contract till 2027 and having been on loan at promoted Leicester and previously, Coventry.

With 14 starts, he played a solid role at the King Power last campaign, under Enzo Maresca’s all-conquering side and can play at both centre-half and left back.

It’s an ambitious move, shades of Steven Gerrard’s lofty attempt to secure City youth kid Phil Foden as he was then, and there’s no denying Doyle can play a bit.

He is also a firmly-established England youth international, with 24 caps at the various levels and even having scored at U21.

The one thing he lacks is experience but that comes with age and growth, and he’s another of those rarities – a left-sided CB like Scott McKenna.

He’s mainly CB, 120 appearances there, but 20 at LB so he’s clearly adaptable, and City clearly think highly of him – whether Pep would be interesting in promoting him to the first team any time soon we’re a bit less sure, and Rangers may just have a chance of nabbing him as a loan.

The problem is long term – we don’t want to borrow players from other teams – if we’re to take them, we want them to be ours, especially lads of the level of Doyle.

Is he beyond Rangers?

Probably – he’s a future Premier League star, even if not for City, and it takes a lot to be worth approaching £20M at his age.

But if Rangers can get him, even on loan, it’s a bit of a statement signing in truth.
