Just in case anyone hadn’t noticed, Euro 2024 begins on Friday evening, as Steve Clarke’s Scotland takes on the hosts Germany for the showpiece occasion.

Honestly, Ibrox Noise isn’t that interested in the whole thing, why?

There’s not a single Rangers player at the whole tournament, which is a sad, sad indictment of where this club really is right now.

Ibrox Noise has always preached that you judge the quality of your squad on the number of international call ups, especially at major tournaments, and that Rangers have absolutely none at the Euros is an embarrassment.

Diabolically, Rangers haven’t had any international call ups for any major tournament in a very long time, the last ones of course being a fair few at Euro 2020, in Helander, Patterson, Barisic and the like.

This shows where Steven Gerrard’s Rangers were, and where Philippe Clement’s Rangers are now.

That the closest thing we have to call ups is Ianis Hagi (who basically has nothing to do with Rangers any more) for Romania and now-departed Ryan Jack on Scotland’s bench is pretty accurate to where this club currently sits.

Nowhere.

If we look at a typical Rangers team/bench from last season, the chronic lack of international players is horrific.

That Ross McCausland (who hasn’t shone at all) is among the few we have, alongside Ridvan Yilmaz (who was overlooked for Germany) gives a major idea of where we as a club really are. Nico Raskin won’t make the step up from youth to senior Belgium.

All our (former) players are either simply not internationals, like Tavernier, Goldson, Butland and Lundstram, or are utterly fringe ones like Dessers and Souttar.

Recruitment was actually not half bad under Steven Gerrard, it built us a collection of quite a few quality players some of whom we sold for big money – but it has absolutely crashed since he left.

Not a single player recruited post-Gerrard has been truly up to scratch, and the decline in our club’s squad quality since he moved on is stark.

This is not to say he was a great manager – he sure as heck had his flaws, and he’s been woeful post-Rangers.

But the squad was a tonne better back then (albeit not incredible) and when we look at it now, zero representatives of our club at the Euros is a sorry sorry mess.

Can’t say Nsiala is exactly going to change that.
