Rangers will not be signing Peñarol’s Damien Garcia, the defensive midfielder currently plying his trade in Uruguay after some loose links had the club interested in the 20-year-old’s services.
In short, he’s signed a new contract with the South Americans and it now contains an £8M+ escape clause, which Rangers 100% aren’t paying.
Rangers are absolutely in the market for a solid new defensive midfielder, with only two at Ibrox now in Dujon Sterling, albeit of course a lack of certainty that manager Philippe Clement will actually use him there, and Nico Raskin, whose position at the club isn’t overly clear/certain.
It means that at present, Rangers don’t have a single established defensive midfielder on the books, with both John Lundstram and Ryan Jack departed from the club.
Would Sergio Damián García Graña (to give him his Sunday name) have been an answer there?
Well the Uruguay side seem to think he’s something special, pinning him down to a new deal and adding an escape clause of nearly £10M, for a 20-year-old.
Rangers have been taking big interest in South American-based players, a curious strategy given the recent record of the club from that market, and most of the players in the crosshairs are young and inexperienced, and certainly haven’t played outside of the Latin continent.
But this is one that won’t continue, Rangers aren’t going to suddenly pay approaching £10M for a kid who has no CV whatsoever.
Rangers wouldn’t pay that for any player ever again, in truth.
