Who can do a better Rangers job than Philippe Clement?

Ibrox Noise have run a few polls on this, and the strong majority of Rangers fans still very much back the manager, even if every Rangers fan Ibrox Noise and our group know ‘in the real world’ do not.

We’ve reasoned both sides of the argument, why he’s the wrong man but why we should (have to) give him the summer and next season, and we don’t deny for one second we have zero faith in him. We expect to lose the cup final and suspect there will be further groundswell of opposition to his madness in the dugout.

That said, ‘who could do a better job?’.

Obviously there’s the basic fails of his management – using Barisic, keeping on picking Lundstram, wasting Sterling at RW – all these things just don’t work and he just keeps on doing them anyway.

Square pegs round holes, and the fans continue to blame the pegs for not fitting.

So who then? Many fans have come into Ibrox Noise saying ‘who’d do a better job’?

Well the reality is Rangers need a manager who has the winning mentality at the highest pressure levels. They don’t need to have won for Real Madrid, but they need to have won, consistently, at a level in which even drawing isn’t an option, and they need to have experienced the pressure of what happens when you do even draw at a club like Rangers.

Some have mentioned Derek McInnes – he has ticked some boxes, and he is a Rangers man, as well as being a much more ready position now than he was when he turned the job down some years ago. But he simply hasn’t won as a manager in a job which expects regular silverware. Aberdeen doesn’t quite qualify. He does absolutely get Rangers, and get understands the expectation, but this doesn’t mean he can handle it.

Indeed, aside Walter Smith (Dundee Utd as they were then), only two managers Rangers have had in the best part of 30 years were experienced winners as managers for clubs on a level with the Famous – Giovanni van Bronckhorst, with his success at Feyenoord, and Dick Advocaat, with his at PSV.

Advocaat’s Dutch Revolution fell apart when Martin O’Neill took over at Celtic, and Gio’s fell apart when the board did not support him going into the Champions League and they expected results with Ben Davies.

We still feel Gio was dreadfully treated by a club he loves – Feyenoord is his first love, but he’s a Rangers man through and through as well, and what he achieved in his first season was spectacular.

He took a post-55-shambles Rangers that had caved under Steven Gerrard without any investment and won the cup against Celtic (albeit Hearts in the final) managed by Angie, and took us to Sevilla.

He was a miracle-worker, and was an Aaron Ramsey boot away from a statue outside Ibrox.

It fell apart when his summer incoming was to replace Calvin Bassey with a Preston reject. Blame Ross Wilson on that.

Are we saying bring Gio back?

What we’re saying is Clement isn’t a patch on him at the moment, and has come nowhere near as good as him in Europe. We should also point out Gio also extended Rangers’ lead to 6 points from 4 inside a month of taking over. Yes really.

Sevilla just killed it after that, even if fans still blame the man for losing the lead. No Scottish club aside Celtic’s Lisbon juggernaut has ever won the league while making the final of a European competition. Just hasn’t happened because our clubs just aren’t strong enough to compete on both fronts.

Clement doesn’t have this excuse because Benfica papped his team out in the last 16.

Where we going with this?

Who could do a better job?

The fact we’re asking that question simply shows Clement himself simply has to do better.

He’s not been good enough, no better than Beale overall – he needs to dramatically step up in the next few months. We are in the same position now we were when Beale was fired.

PC’s biggest backers keep making excuses for him, maybe he should win to prove them right?

We’d all love to look so stupid for doubting him.
