Gareth Southgate, under his management at least, has definitively ended Jack Butland’s England ‘career’ after picking four goalkeepers for his England squad for Germany and STILL omitting Rangers’ number one.

Despite the information we had that he was going to go with four goalkeepers, which he did, inexplicably Southgate chose James Trafford of relegated Burnley to go to Germany on top of Dean Henderson and Aaron Ramsdale, and predictable Jordan Pickford as number one.

It is the biggest smack in Butland’s face, that even the manager increasing the goalkeeper pool to four, he went with all his worst options between the sticks, even going with a Championship goalie over Rangers’ number one.

This is a very bleak sign for Rangers keeping Butland – he will simply not get the nod for England under Southgate as long as he’s at Rangers, but even more tellingly, Southgate is going with his pals, goalies he stays loyal to, and Butland just isn’t part of that clique.

Jack Butland could have saves 25 piledrivers with his pinkie and it wouldn’t have been enough for Southgate – Butland’s England chances under Southgate are zero, and he will never get the call up.

Doesn’t matter that he had, by an absolute mile, the best season of all Southgate’s choices, he wasn’t getting the call because the manager isn’t interested.

Why he came to the Old Firm we’re not sure, because it’s starting to look like he wasn’t interested in Butland at all.

But that’s that anyway.

Under Southgate, and at Rangers, Butland will never get an England cap again.
