Well it’s safe to say this isn’t going to be an easy summer for Rangers and manager Philippe Clement – after signing a ‘preliminary’ contract with the Ibrox side, Panama defender Jose Cordoba has apparently changed his mind and chosen Norwich in England’s Championship.
For now anyway.
The Levski Sofia man had put pen to ‘preliminary’ paper for a Rangers contract pertaining to a £3.2M fee, but unfortunately the problem here is that that is more less the same as a gentleman’s agreement.
A preliminary contract is just shaking hands, but if someone with bigger hands comes along, it’s meaningless.
And it appears Ipswich have stolen a march on the 22-year-old, with the Bulgarian press suggesting not only does he prefer Norwich, but he prefers the Championship, and Sofia prefer the increased offered price.
Whether this has a further twist in the story we shall see, but we would safely say that all bets are off, including Brazilian Jefte.
We think this could be a very difficult summer for Rangers, because we don’t have a lot of carrots to offer prospective players, with no guarantee of Champions League, and we’ve obviously missed out on winning the title.
Our budget is modest, and we’re going to find it quite hard to get Rangers-level players.
If a 9-cap Panama defender prefers the English Championship to Rangers, it shows just what we’re up against in the pursuit of better players.
We’ll await with caution further developments, of course, but expect many disappointments and twists this summer as players seem inches away from signing only to Helicopter Sunday their butts away from Ibrox at the last moment.
Oh what fun this summer may be.
